How To Wear An Oversized Blazer: Your Layering Essential
Discover the timeless, seasonless joy of the oversized blazer with stylist Gemma Keil.
No doubt, the oversized blazer is our most-repeated, most-precious wardrobe component. It’s the true definition of seasonless wear – in our eyes, just as appropriate on a bar-ready summer’s evening as a cosied-up winter’s day. They add dimension and are the ideal diving board for exploring and expressing personal style.
A statement layering essential, we asked stylist Gemma Keil to give us a rundown on this cool weather wear and help us define the “perfect oversized blazer.”
Perfection *Does* Exist
“As the name suggests, an oversized blazer should have a relaxed fit,” says Gemma. “It's still important to check the shoulder width and arm length.” Use the measurements guide on each BLANCA blazer to identify the best fit for you – whether you’re looking for ultra-baggy, just-right, or a more traditional silhouette. We aim for a slightly slouchy shoulder and sleeves that delicately graze the fingers as the ideal business-meets-breezy vibe.
“I also look for great fabrications, and preference men’s style checks, a deep charcoal or classic black, that will work hard in my wardrobe.”
Winter Layers: How To Style An Oversized Blazer
“Wearing a blazer elevates your overall look and makes you appear more put together,” she notes. Looks that err on the side of casual are instantly more complex and professional. Gemma recommends opting for a neutral colour palette that allows easy coordination and versatility – a failsafe and great investment, no matter the global trends.
Play with textures via the blazer and your chosen supplementary items, adding extra depth and interest. Gemma’s faves include tweed, mohair and chunky knits, pieces with embellished buttons and exaggerated shapes.
Below, her preferred oversized blazer outfits.
For Work
“When I’m in the office, I like to pair a blazer back with a tailored pant and crew neck t-shirt. I’ll belt the trousers and wear it back with a smarter flat shoe, usually a loafer or ballet flat.” Also consider an equally oversized outer layer as your friend when battling nature’s forces. It also acts as an incognito cocoon on your decompressing, “me-time-only” commute.
For Play
“Wearing a blazer can definitely be sexy, and if I’m out for dinner, I’ll put on a strong red lip and wear something a bit more cinched underneath. I also like wearing a full tailored look out to dinner.”
For Personality
“Belting an oversized blazer creates such a great shape and can instantly dress the look up. Wearing a cute brooch on your lapel is also a nice way to incorporate some embellishment and looks super chic.” For personality-riddled blazers, perhaps opt for a Western-inspired flair with fringed details or a vibrant, always memorable print.
